Tongue Control


James 1:26 —
26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.  

James 3:5 —
5 Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.  

James 3:6 —
6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.  

James 3:8 —
8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.  

1 Peter 3:10 —
10 For, 
“Whoever would love life 
and see good days 
must keep his tongue from evil 
and his lips from deceitful speech.”  

Proverbs 21:23 —
23     He who guards his mouth and his tongue 
keeps himself from calamity.  

Ecclesiastes 5:2 —
2     Do not be quick with your mouth, 
do not be hasty in your heart 
to utter anything before God. 
God is in heaven 
and you are on earth, 
so let your words be few.  

Ecclesiastes 10:12 —
12     Words from a wise man’s mouth are gracious, 
but a fool is consumed by his own lips.

 

Sowing Seeds of Distrust Is an Aid to the Enemy.--It is natural for human beings to speak sharp words. Those who yield to this inclination open the door for Satan to enter their hearts and to make them quick to remember the mistakes and errors of others. Their failings are dwelt upon, their deficiencies noted, and words are spoken that cause a lack of confidence in one who is doing his best to fulfill his duty as a laborer together with God. Often the seeds of distrust are sown because one thinks that he ought to have been favored but was not.

God calls upon believers to cease finding fault, to cease making hasty, unkind speeches. Parents, let the words that you speak to your children be kind and pleasant, that angels may have your help in drawing them to Christ. A thorough reformation is needed in the home church. Let it begin at once. Let all grumbling and fretting and scolding cease. Those who fret and scold shut out the angels of heaven and open the door to evil angels. (Adventist Home – 441)
